Vertical Structure and Color of Jovian Latitudinal Cloud Bands during the Juno Era

Abstract The identity of the coloring agent(s) in Jupiter’s atmosphere and exact structure uppermost cloud deck are yet to be conclusively understood. Crème Brûlée model tropospheric clouds, originally proposed by Baines et al. expanded upon Sromovsky al., presumes that chromophore measured Carlson is singular agent troposphere. In this work, we test validity using spectra during Juno spacecraft’s fifth perijove pass 2017 March. These data were obtained as part an international ground-based observing campaign support mission New Mexico State University Acousto-optic Imaging Camera at 3.5 m telescope Apache Point Observatory Sunspot, NM, USA. We find cloud-layering scheme can reproduce visible spectrum both with modifications its imaginary index refraction spectrum. While provides reasonable results for regions bands such North Equatorial Belt Zone, it not a safe assumption unique weather events, 2016–2017 Southern outbreak was captured our measurements.
